If you drive through Trussville today, you’ll probably notice significant roadway construction on a four-mile section of I-59 between the I-459 interchange and Chalkville Mountain Road.

On Thursday, October 17, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) launched a new project aimed at “reconstructing and expanding a critical segment” of Interstate 59 (I-59) in Trussville.

What to know about the I-59 Trussville project

According to a recent ALDOT press release, the primary goal of the project is to address the deteriorating condition of that segment of I-59, which was originally constructed and opened to traffic in the mid-1970s.

The project begins at the I-459 interchange near Edwards Lake Road and ends just north of County Road 10 (Chalkville Mountain Road) in Trussville, and includes the complete removal and replacement of the existing roadway pavement on both the northbound and southbound lanes.

In addition, ALDOT will add an additional lane in each direction, expanding this section of I-59 from a four-lane roadway into a six-lane thoroughfare. The two additional lanes will be constructed within the existing medium so the footprint of the interstate does not expand.

The project will be completed by Dothan-based Wiregrass Construction, which won the bidding process at $70,377,212.
