Creatively decorated trunks are always a must-see at this event, from cute to silly to clever.

All trunks will include yummy candy and some will even have children’s games.

“I started participating in Asbury’s Trunk or Treat when helping my daughter decorate her trunk and to enjoy it with my grandkids.

I enjoyed it so much that I’m now all in, dressing up in costumes and everything!

I love interacting with the kids and seeing the smiles on their faces. It’s such a fun way to include others in the community and show them the love we have for Jesus and others.”

Lynda Myer, Asbury UMC 2024 Trunk Participant

2. It’s full of festival fun

October is prime time for fall festival fun. You’ll discover all sorts of activities and entertainment at the Trunk or Treat.

Here are some things to expect:

Here’s the list of which trucks to visit during the event:

“We go all out to make this a fun, safe, family event for the community we serve. This was the first big Asbury event my family attended when we moved to Birmingham two years ago.

What impressed us even more than the scale of the event and the variety of activities was the intentional sensory-friendly time at the beginning of the event. I love that we can continue that care and thoughtfulness today!”

Melanie Stewart, Associate Director, Asbury Kids

3.  It’s stocked with candy

October is the one month of the year where I let myself go candy wild. If you do too, this is the event for you.

Each year, Asbury ensures that their annual trunk or treat is bursting with goodies. And it’s not just the discount bubble gum and off-brand gummies. They have the good stuff, like mini Twix, Snickers, and Skittles.

The best part about indulging in these tasty treats? It’s free! And they don’t mind letting parents enjoy some, too.

That will definitely save you some time sneaking it out of their room while they’re asleep. Come on, I know you do it too.

Psst—Asbury’s Trunk or Treat draws in around 500 kids each year. You can help by donating here.

4. It’s sensory-friendly

Going out with your family can be a blast. But sometimes, it can lead to overstimulation for kids and parents.

A special thing to know about Asbury’s annual Trunk or Treat is that it’s sensory-friendly.

For anyone needing some time away from the noise and excitement, a sensory tent will be available.

It will have activities and resources to help kids and adults feel less overwhelmed, like noise-canceling headphones and books. There will also be tactile simulation bins for those soothed by touch.

There will also be a designated time from 3:30-4PM when children with sensory challenges can experience the event in a calmer, less crowded environment.

5. You can dress up!

Candy may top your list for why Halloween-inspired events like trunk or treats are awesome. But, don’t forget the costumes!

Asbury’s Trunk or Treat is the perfect time to let your imagination run wild. So dress up the kids—and yourself!—and show off your creation. Themed family costumes are always fun, too.

Bonus—Asbury’s prayer garden is officially open

Asbury celebrated the grand opening of its Labyrinth Prayer Garden on Sunday, September 29. This contemplative space is open to the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“This garden is for anyone seeking a quiet place to find rest and solitude with God.

Walk the labyrinth, sit on the garden’s benches, listen to the fountain, breathe, pray. It’s all encouraged and welcomed here.”

Robyn White, Adult Ministry Director and Garden Visionary, Asbury UMC
