The future of local shops in Birmingham

Owners Bart and Shannon Styes have contributed vastly to the local shop scene here in Birmingham.

With their passion for locally sourced ingredients and clothing, both owners understand the need for more sustainable ways of eating and shopping. Cheap Chick, another one of their business ventures, focused on inclusivity-based second-hand retail.

Their appreciation of diversity helped Birmingham to provide a safe space to be creative and shop for a good cause: sustainability. Unfortunately, the store closed earlier in the year.

Now, their beloved coffee shop in Hoover is closing its doors due to the recent lack of support for local businesses in Birmingham.

“We have been moved to hear from so many out of state college students, folks who moved here from other parts of the US or even other countries, that Wild Roast was the first place they felt welcomed into the community or found their home away from home.

The Birmingham area is a great place to live, study, or work, and we are grateful to hear that our hospitality and welcoming/inclusive environment was received the way we had hoped when we first opened our doors.”
