Barons 2, Biscuits 1
In Game 1, Birmingham went on the road and grabbed a 7-2 win Sunday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery. That result gave the Barons an opportunity to clinch the championship in front of their home fans.
It was officially a three-game series but the Barons did not let their first opportunity pass by.
Birmingham scored in the first inning when an RBI single from catcher Michael Turner knocked in Rikuu Nashida. That appeared to be all the Barons needed but Montgomery would force extra innings with an RBI from Chandler Simpson in the ninth inning.
However, in the 10th, DJ Gladney singled to centerfield to score Shawn Goosenberg. That run would deliver the walkoff victory, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
First championship since 2013
Birmingham’s last title came in 2013 which was the same year Regions Field opened and it was the last time the Barons made a playoff appearance. That was also the last time a team from Alabama won the Southern League.
The Barons now have eight Southern League championships to their name.
