On Friday, September 20, residents, public and private partners and more came together to cut the ribbon on Southtown Family—the first residential property at Edgehill at Southtown, a mixed-use development on Birmingham’s Southside.

The new building will welcome its first residents on Tuesday, October 1.

It was a cold, drizzly day when we gathered to witness the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) begin the demolition of Birmingham’s Southtown Court back in December 2021.

It only made sense that a bright and sunny day would accompany the completion of the first residential building at Edgehill at Southtown.

Today, dozens of local officials, representatives, business leaders and future residents gathered to cut the ribbon at Southtown Family, a $17M building that has been under construction since April 2023.

The development was made possible through the combined effort of several public and private partners, including:

  • The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District
  • BREC Development
  • Hollyhand Companies
  • Southside Development Company
  • SPM
  • Alabama Housing Finance Authority
  • Servis1st Bank
  • CR Endeavors

Located at the corner of 23rd Street South and 9th Court South, Southtown Family includes a mix of 60 one-, two- and three- residential units with a wide array of amenities, including:

  • A computer room
  • A fitness center
  • A playground
  • A community room
  • A gazebo
  • And more!

“When families move in here next month, they can look forward to 60 units of affordable houses equipped with modern amenities, such as study rooms, community spaces, washers and dryers in apartments, a business center and lounges.

What I’m equally as excited about—as you hear the construction noise in the background—is that we’re not done yet.”

Mayor Randall Woodfin

“I don’t have the loudest voice, and there is a lot of noise in the background. Do appreciate that noise in the background, because that noise signifies progress.

I believe today is a day that symbolizes and is a result of when partnerships and passion really come today.”

Mayor Randall Woodfin

Construction is already well underway on the next building on Edgehill at Southtown’s campus—Southtown Senior. Once complete, Southtown Senior will consist of 143 one- and two-bedroom units as well as community amenities.

The Edgehill at Southtown development is located on the former campus of Southtown Court, a housing development constructed in the 1940s. Before demolition, Southtown Court consisted of 55 buildings with 455 obsolete public housing units.
