September is GYN Cancer Awareness Month. (Laura Crandall Brown Foundation)

The Head Over Teal 5K &10K is part of the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation’s 12th annual A State of Teal Awareness Campaign, which aims to increase awareness about gynecologic cancers.

The five main types of gynecologic (GYN) cancers—ovarian, cervical, endometrial/uterine, vaginal and vulvar—are responsible for the deaths of more than 34,000 women each year. To make matters worse, there are no early detection tests for four of the five GYN cancers.

“Coupling this campaign with Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month gives us the unique opportunity to double our efforts in the fight against gynecologic cancers.

Spreading awareness about early detection signs and symptoms has the potential to save a life, is paramount for women of all ages, and is a large part of our vocation here at LCBF.”

Meg McGlamery, Executive Director, Laura Crandall Brown Foundation

Proceeds from the race benefit the LCBF and its missions, including:

  • Providing GYN cancer programs to women, patients and caregivers throughout the year
  • Support for early detection research, GYN cancer awareness education and support services to patients and their families

“Head Over Teal is instrumental in carrying out the foundation’s pursuit of early detection research funding, community empowerment through gynecologic cancer awareness, and emotional and financial support services.”

Irene Goddard, Development Director, Laura Crandall Brown Foundation

Thinking about running your first 5K or 10K? As a runner with a handful of 5K’s under my belt, here are a few tips that have helped me on race day.

  • Get a good night’s sleep.
  • Eat a small breakfast or snack before the race.
  • Warm up before the race with dynamic stretches and a jog.
  • Dress appropriately — keep an eye on the forecasted temperature and remember that you’ll warm up as you start running.
  • Don’t start the race running too fast — you’ve got 5K (3.1 miles) or 10K (6.2 miles) to get through!
  • Hydrate beforehand and take advantage of the water stops throughout the course.

Finally, remember to have fun! You don’t need to set any land-speed records, and you’re only competing against yourself.
