No matter how close you are as a family, it’s not always easy to find somewhere you can all socialize. It’s challenging to meet friends and feel a part of your community together.
The good news? We found a way.
Read on for how one local church is helping families in and around North Shelby County get involved and connect through events, special serve days and more.
1. Wednesday Nights at Asbury
Does your family get the mid-week slump? Mine does. By Wednesday, I’m tired of cooking dinner and already thinking ahead to the weekend.
To keep your crew’s spirits high, spend your Wednesday evenings at Asbury United Methodist Church.
Here’s a look at the programming offered:
Wednesday Night Dinner
Stay out of the kitchen and gather around Asbury’s table for family-style meals catered by Home Plate Cooking in Helena.
- When: Wednesdays, 5-6:30PM
Adults: Midweek Sabbath
Calling all parents! Your kids may think they are the only ones who need friends, but we know that’s not true.
Join fellow adults at Asbury for something fun each week—Midweek Sabbath: Opportunities for rest, growth, and wellness. Think yoga, faith-growth and self-help classes, game night and meditation.
Adults choose what they want to do each week; there’s no commitment to any one activity.
You can also make joyful noise with the Chancel or Handbell Choirs.
- Handbell Choir rehearsal: Wednesdays, 6-7PM in Room 141
- Chancel Choir rehearsal: Wednesdays, 7-8:30PM in Room 143

RESET Students: Life Groups
Middle and high school can be a tough time for kids and their families.
Technology may have helped Gens Z and Alpha become highly connected, but it’s also great to gather with friends in real time.
To get your kids out of the house and off their devices, RESET Student Life Groups may be just what you’re looking for.
Each week, Birmingham-area students and adult leaders meet to listen, mentor and guide each other on various topics.
The best part? Your kids will create life-changing friendships while having fun.
- When: Wednesdays, 6-7:30PM
- Details
Asbury Kids: Choir & Bible Groups
If you have kids and pre-teens in elementary school, Asbury Kids introduces them to music and Bible stories. It also gives them space to grow while connecting with other kids their age.
- When:
- Choir Rehearsal: Wednesday, 6-6:30PM
- Bible Groups: Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30PM
- Details
2. Mission of the Month
August means back to school for most of the Greater Birmingham Area. This means families need supplies.
To help, Asbury’s August Mission of the Month is Back-To-School.
They donated 200 packed backpacks to ELI Thrive and sent supplies to Grace Klein Community. Both organizations provided 2024-25 school supplies to students throughout the Birmingham area.
A great thing about Asbury is there’s a new mission each month.
The goal? To encourage families to get involved and help those in the Greater Birmingham Area and beyond.
Asbury’s Giggles & Grace Consignment Sale is another way you and the family can get involved. This special event sells gently used children’s essentials like clothes, shoes and toys at low prices.
Each year, the sale is a huge success, helping families across the Greater Birmingham Area. Check out the last event that took place in February.
You can take part in the next sale on Friday, August 23 and Saturday, August 24.

3. Asbury Serves Day
Another way to expand your family’s inner circle is through Asbury Serves Days. Every event aims to help a local nonprofit through projects based on needs.
Asbury Serves Days have helped these nonprofits:
- Oak Mountain Missions
- Grace Klein Community
- The Wellhouse
- Camp Hargis
- Shepherds Fold
- King’s Home, Hope Filled Rooms
- Urban Ministry
On this Saturday, October 5, Asbury members will focus their efforts on helping two local ministries:
- Hope Filled Rooms
- The Wellhouse
Here’s a peek at a previous Asbury Serves Day.
Psst, they’ll host their next event on Saturday, October 5.
4. Asbury’s Food Pantry
As a mom, feeding my family is something I think about every single day. For many Birmingham-area families, access to food is a struggle.
Since 2011, Asbury has run its very own food pantry. It provides anyone facing food insecurity with more than 25 weekly items to help stock their kitchen.
Helping feed those in need is a beautiful way for your family to give back. At Asbury, you can choose to volunteer in the Food Pantry or donate to it.
5. Costa Rica mission trips
Have you ever wished your family could travel abroad to learn about other cultures and help people in meaningful ways?
For over a decade, Asbury has partnered with Costa Rica Missions Projects.
Each summer, a team of 30 goes to San Isidro to connect with the people there.
During their visit, they:
- Build churches, community + counseling centers and parsonages
- Run children’s Bible school programs for San Isidro kids
- Worship
- Show the love of Christ to everyone they meet
Mission trips are a fantastic way for your family to travel, bond and help those in need.
