If you’ve been near Uptown lately, you might have noticed a new mural pop up on the side of the Sheraton Hotel facing City Walk BHAM.

We spoke to local muralist and Blank Space Bham founder Meghan McCollum about its design and how this vibrant new project came to be.

When the BJCC began its renovation of the Sheraton Hotel lobby, there was a block of doors outside that was “begging for a mural,” said Toni Dennis.

“In 2023, Blank Space happened to have another project nearby City Walk BHAM. Then, flash forward one year later when the BJCC was in the planning stages of a renovation, Meghan immediately came to mind.

Meghan and her team rose to the challenge and produced this beautiful feature that now highlights the entire BJCC campus.”

With nearly complete creative liberty, Meghan ultimately decided to use the opportunity to honor her mother.

“I’ve been a muralist for nearly a decade now, and it’s very rarely I get such free rein to create. When considering how to best maximize this massive space, I was struck by how special this opportunity truly was.

At the end of the day, I wouldn’t have accomplished half of what I’ve done had it not been for the support of my mom. She’s always pushed me to dream big, and live a life full of faith in the face adversity. I wanted to take this opportunity to show her just how big those dreams have become.”

The final product is titled “Infinite Love,” with specific elements honoring her mother. It features symbols like butterflies representing Meghan and her sisters or “her butterflies”, and tulips representing the time they shared gardening together.

At nearly 3,200 square feet, the mural was completed in only two weeks.
