One of the highlights of the day is a visit by Mike Mays, the son of Willie Mays.

“He took a big interest in the ballpark since his dad’s passing, and he was there for the game. He just wanted to come back and be around the people, and meet the people. It’s a big deal Willie Mays was such a cornerstone to that ballpark, and for his son to take an interest, it really means a lot to me and fans.”

The day is loaded with activities including:

  • Card and memorabilia show, set up inside both clubhouses
  • Free autograph session with former big leaguers Wes Helms – Former Atlanta Braves infielder; Andy Phillips – Former New York Yankees and University of Alabama star; Chris Hammond – Former major league pitcher with several teams including the Braves and Yankees
  • Special tours of the ballpark by Friends of Rickwood Field volunteers
  • Three travel ball games are scheduled (weather permitting)
  • Purchase a Rickwood wristband and receive a hot dog and a coke

This is the first big event at the Rickfield since the nationally televised MLB at Rickwood Field Tribute to the Negro Leagues game between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants.

“It’s going to be a good day. I’m excited for people to get to see the ballpark.”
