Rare BSC books maps and atlases to be auctioned off on July 31 & August 1

Nearly 1000, rare books, maps, and atlases from Birmingham-Southern College are slated to be auctioned off on July 31 & August 1.

Grant Zahajko Auctions from Davenport, Washington near Spokane is holding online and live events over the two days.

“We specialize in books. Everybody has an opportunity to view these items and get a chance to bid on them and be a successful high bidder. They can bid online on multiple platforms or in person if they happen to be in the area. They can also bid by phone or absentee bid. So there’s lots of different ways people can participate and open to everybody.”

Items stored in the BSC “Wood room”

The 168-year-old liberal college closed its doors on May 31st of this year forcing the sale of the school’s assets. Last month, BSC sold statues, furniture and trophies through a local estate sale and auction conducted by Hanna Antiques.

The items up for this auction were stored on campus in a locked  special collection room called the “Wood room.” of books was stored and shelved in a locked special collections room called the “Wood room.”

According to the  Grant Zahajko Auctions, the books will feature subjects that include Americana, Presidents, Founding Fathers, Southern States, Alabama, Florida, the Carolinas, Anti-Slavery, Exploration and more. Also included are important atlases, maps, pamphlets and more. 

I went through and inspected every book and every piece of paper. That’s how we were able to unearth some really important historical items.”

Notable items included:

  • Rare copy of James Joyce’s “Ulysses,” one of 2,000 first-edition English prints that were made in 1922
  • Signed, first-edition copy of Tuskegee’s  Booker T. Washington’s “The Story of the Negro: The Rise of the Race from Slavery” 
  • Copy of A New General Atlas, Containing a Geographical and Historical Account of All the Empires, Kingdoms and Other Dominions of the World

A preview will be held live at the Davenport gallery on Tuesday, July 30, from 1PM to 5PM Pacific time.
