Milky Way Ice Cream Bar is now open in Southside

Birminghamians looking to satisfy their sweet tooth have a new option in Southside. Milky Way Ice Cream Bar officially opened its doors on Saturday, June 22nd at 1405 15th Street South, in the former Wilson’s Hot and Sweet Café space next to Wilson’s Market.

Milky Way Ice Cream Bar is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Hussain-Ali Mithani, whose family owns and operates Wilson’s Market.

“For years, this space has been used as a storage room for Wilson’s Market. One day, I had the idea to try something new here.

I had a little money saved up, and I knew that this area doesn’t have a lot of options for desserts. I decided to open my own dessert place, so I combined desserts with my love for space and came up with Milky Way Ice Cream Bar.”

Already, Milky Way Ice Cream Bar has been a hit with residents in Southside and students from UAB, which is just a few blocks away.

Milky Way Ice Cream Bar offers 21 different flavors of ice cream, including:

BONUS: Ali eventually plans to add alcohol-infused ice cream options to the menu.

Aside from the ice cream—purchased from Blue Bell Creameries and Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream—everything on the menu is homemade.

“Its summertime, so the snow cones have been a big hit. Everyone loves a good milkshake and a sundae—and I can make a mean Sundae! Our brownies are very good; every person that comes in to try the brownies have fallen in love.”

In addition, Milky Way Ice Cream Bar offers a variety of international desserts.

“Because of UAB, there are a lot of international students around here—and a lot of them are homesick, I see it all the time.

I wanted to offer desserts that would remind them of home, so I carry lassi, falooda and kulfis. Everyone that has tried them loves them!”
