If you’re like me and grew up in Birmingham, there’s nothing that reminds me of my childhood more than a coke float at an old-fashioned soda shop.

Around the city, there are still a handful of these local spots with homemade ice cream makers and old-fashioned soda fountains to get your nostalgia fix.

1. Gilchrist | Mountain Brook

If you don’t stop at Gilchrist for lunch after checking out the Birmingham Zoo, what are you doing? Established in 1928, this old-fashioned soda shop in Mountain Brook Village serves sandwiches, breakfast plates, ice cream and their famous limeade.

2. Crestwood Pharmacy + Soda Fountain | Crestwood

Crestwood Pharmacy definitely isn’t your traditional pharmacy. In addition to medicine and wellness goods, this specialty shop offers an old-fashioned soda fountain, ice cream and even hemp-derived CBD and THC products.

3. The Three Earred Rabbit | Trussville

This soda shop and ice cream parlor has been serving the Trussville community for over a decade. The Three-Earred Rabbit serves all kinds of tasty creations, like the orange blossom float—orange sherbet, vanilla ice cream mixed with sprite soda.

4. Jimbo’s Soda Fountain | Mt Laurel

Located in Mt Laurel, Jimbo’s is a family-owned shop serving breakfast and lunch. Known for its tasty burgers and hand-dipped ice cream cones, Jimbo’s is a family favorite with something for everyone.

Pro tip: On Saturdays only, they serve the best cinnamon rolls in town. Make sure you get there early to snag one.
