A new bookstore has opened in downtown Leeds this week called The Burrow.

On the Saturday before its grand opening on June 24th, owners Andi and Josh Argo gave Bham Now a special inside look at the new shop.

Here is what we learned.

You may ask, where does the bookstore’s name – The Burrow – come from? If you are a Harry Potter fan, you probably chuckle and say this is a silly question. The Burrow is Ron Weasley’s family home.

“The Burrow to me is a place that is cozy and welcoming. Everybody loves to hang out there. It’s very eclectic. That’s the kind of the feel I wanted for our store — a place where everyone is welcome to come hang out. To feel like they belong.”

A cozy place, The Burrow, has a number of places in the shop where you can sit on a couch with friends or at a table to play a board game. There is also a nice spot where you can read a book to your child. Even though it is not a coffee house, they offer the following:

  • Coffee (fresh brewed served in a canister) and smoothies
  • Muffins and baked goods
  • Juice boxes and soft drinks

Home to 3.5 star books

The store is filled with primarily secondhand books of every kind from baby picture books to adult fiction and non-fiction books.

And the Argos are going to make sure they only sell high quality books by requiring each and every one of them to score a 3.5 or above on the popular book reading app Goodreads.

“In order to be on our shelves, they have to have three and a half stars. I’m not gonna sell any bad books. So every book on our shelves are good books.”

In addition to the books and snacks, The Burrow does have a space they are creating for book clubs to meet.
