Mark your calendar—on Saturday, June 22, the Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) is hosting the African Heritage Festival. This family-friendly event will be an afternoon of music, dance, food and art.

Here’s an overview of the event schedule:
- 1-2PM: Panel Discussion—The Evolution of Black Hair in Birmingham, Alabama
- 3:30-4PM: African Storytelling with Dr. Tolu
- 3-4PM: West African Drumming Performance by Sahi On Ko Djony (requires ticket)
- 4:30- 5PM: African Storytelling with Dr. Tolu
Anytime from 1-5PM, you will have access to face painting, art activities and fabric exploration with Dr. Tolu.
What to expect
The annual African Heritage Festival showcases the vibrant traditions and cultures of regions across the African diaspora. The BMA is home to a diverse collection of African art, including:
- Headdresses
- Masks
- Pottery
- Print-making materials
- Textiles
In addition to exploring the museum’s art collection, you have the chance to experience a taste of African cultures with musical performances, art workshops and culinary delights.

A beloved Magic City tradition is returning later this summer. BMA has announced Art On The Rocks will be back in Birmingham August 2.
A celebration of art, music, and culture, the highly-anticipated event is headlined by Ric Wilson, a Chicago-based artist known for his infectious energy and unique blend of hip-hop, funk and soul.
