Blake James is no stranger to TV. He started doing small commercials for Kellogg’s and eventually moved up to AT&T and Sony Pictures. He always knew he had a knack for acting, even from a young age. In fact, Blake missed his middle school graduation in order to chase his dreams of being on the big screen. We had a chance to speak with Blake about his biggest inspiration and how he knew acting was his calling.

“I think one of my big biggest inspirations really is my pops. My dad has implemented a lot in me since I was a kid and also the morals that I have now. He’s a big part of the reason I have the mindset that I do right now and that I’m experiencing the success that I am right now.”

One major event that changed Blake’s perspective was getting the chance to tell his story on television. His very first project, “Little Lens: Everyday Life Through the Eyes of Black Children,” allowed him to share why the story of his grandpa had an everlasting effect on his determination. Blake tells us he wanted to use that outlet to help others understand his passion.

Where it all started

According to Blake, to understand his drive, you have to understand the dynamic of his family. Hailing from Hoover, Blake comes from a tight-knit family who equally share his love for sports. Growing up, he’d always imagined he would play basketball or football, but instead, he found a passion for acting.

“We have family in Orlando who would always tell us we should start acting because they feel my personality. My work was for the big screen, so we never really paid too much attention to it. At the time, basketball was what I wanted to do. But we ended up giving it a shot, and it ended up working out pretty well.”

Hoover has always held a special place in Blake’s heart. As the youngest of two, he grew up loving his community. He shares with us that he loves Bimringham’s rich history and culture, but most importantly, he loves his family and friends.

“I feel my favorite thing is just my friends and my family. I feel like that’s a big part of why I call Birmingham home. I am developing the relationships because I was born and raised there.”

Some of Blake’s biggest inspirations include simply being grateful. He applies the lessons he has learned from his mentors to himself. According to Blake, he begins his mornings by thanking God for another day.
