Automatic Seafood and James Beard Award-winning Chef Adam Evans, in partnership with Chef Luke Joseph and owner Raymond J. Harbert, have opened Current Charcoal Grill.

As reported by Bham Now in March, the new fine dining restaurant pays homage to a wide range of flavors, ingredients and techniques of Asian cuisine— utilizing a centuries-old approach to cooking with traditional Binchotan charcoals.

The establishment is located near The Fennec and Railroad Park at 1625 Second Avenue South, Suite A, Birmingham, AL 35233.

Amazing food, welcoming atmosphere

Evans is Chef-Partner in this new-to-Birmingham endeavor with Chef Luke Joseph, who worked in multiple Australian establishments before becoming part of the Automatic Seafood & Oysters team.

Bham Now’s own Callie Morrison tried several items at the opening.

They were:

  • Year of the Rabbit cocktail
  • Pork skewer
  • Chicken thigh skewer
  • Tuna nigiri
  • Pork + shiitake dumplings
  • Tonkotsu ramen
  • Dark chocolate delice
  • Toasted milk soft serve with huckleberry + pistachio

“Not only was the food amazing, but the atmosphere was welcoming, the service was incredible and the staff was knowledgeable—I kept wanting to try more. I will definitely be back.”

The inside of Current Charcoal Grill is designed by Suzanne Humphries Evans, Adam’s wife, who also designed Automatic Seafood & Oysters.

The concept’s design palette is heavily influenced by the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean. It speaks to both land and sea by incorporating touches of teal, blue and black, intermixed with earth tones of clay and copper throughout.

Translating the inspiration behind the Asian-influenced menu into the space, Current Charcoal Grill includes Shou Sugi Ban wood paneling, a 200-year-old Chinese altar table, Shibori-dyed fabrics and rice paper lanterns.

Seating will accommodate up to 120 guests and there is a 70-foot-long banquette.

Presently, Current Charcoal Grill is open daily from 5:00PM. to 10:00PM. They plan to launch lunch service.

Walk-ins are welcome, and reservations can be made via Resy. Follow @currentcharcoalgrill or visit currentcharcoalgrill.com for more information.
