Do you know the steps to perform CPR? (Bham Now)

Did you know Birmingham’s bystander CPR rate is only 7.52%? The national average is 40%, which means we have a lot of work to do to help keep our friends, neighbors, coworkers and families safe.

To do our part, six of us at Bham Now recently participated in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) + Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Training with the American Red Cross.

Here’s a look at what we learned and how you can sign your company or group up for this life-saving course.

About CPR Training

According to the American Red Cross, in one year alone, 436,000 Americans die from cardiac arrest. More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital.

Here are some more stats to know from the American Red Cross:

  • If performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
  • Using an AED during CPR can increase survival rates by nearly 50%.
  • Half of all US workers are unable to locate an AED at their workplace.

By receiving CPR + AED Training, you can help save a life.

The American Red Cross offers many training courses for companies.

Bham Now opted for CPR + AED Training—a blended learning course that consists of two parts:

1. Online content skills session—includes reading, watching videos + answering questions. This must be completed in order to attend the in-person hands-on training.

2. Classroom segment—your company will gather at a set time + location to receive in-person/hands-on instruction.

Each person who passes both parts of the course receives a certification valid for two years.

To take part in CPR Training with the American Red Cross, participants must be at least 16 years old on the last day of the online instructor-led course.

“Learning CPR was something our team wanted to do.

The Red Cross made it super easy by bringing a training expert to our office and hosting it right after work.

Our team now feels more equipped to support emergencies.

Our mission as a company is to support local. We need to get more local citizens training so we can help save the lives of friends, family and neighbors.”

Cindy Martin, President/CEO, Bham Now

What did the Bham Now team have to say about the course?

Jessica Allen, Senior Account Executive, Bham Now

“It can be intimidating, even scary, to think about the possibility of having to help someone during an emergency.

Thomas McCarty did a wonderful job calming our nerves and creating an environment where we felt comfortable asking questions and felt prepared to help when and if that time comes.”

Sharron Swain, Content Manager, Bham Now:

“I was happy to have the opportunity to do the CPR Training through work for three main reasons:

  1. Once you reach a certain age, you know plenty of people with serious heart issues.
  2. Back in December, I wrote this article highlighting that Birmingham’s bystander CPR rate is only 7.52%, which is dangerously low for all of us.
  3. As a leader in Scouts BSA Troop 97, I knew this was the right thing to do.

The training was fantastic, and I would encourage anyone who’s willing and able to do it as soon as they can.”

Trey Huie, Account Executive, Bham now:

“I’ve previously been trained in CPR and wanted to reaffirm my skills by learning up-to-date techniques.

Overall, it was extremely helpful. I feel much more prepared for an emergency.”
