4. Participate in old + new (like eSports, Baton Twirling & Powerlifting)!

Competing in baton twirling isn’t just about showing off your skills—it’s a chance to let your creativity shine.

This year’s games will feature exciting new sports, including:

Esports, the electrifying world of competitive video gaming, pits players and teams against each other in a thrilling array of digital battlegrounds.

DYK that eSports is the fastest-growing modern sport in the world? The sport has over 10 million active competitors within different genres.

“E-sports can be broken down into different video games that are either designed for competitive play or casual party-style games that have evolved into a competitive format. The main game for the eSports tournament is Super Smash Brothers Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch.

This tournament is a great opportunity for people to connect. The competitive smash scene was how I started making friendships again in an unfamiliar city as we were able to connect over a common interest. I’d imagine there are a lot of people out there that have had similar experiences to me and would like to connect.”

Andrew Sluss, eSports Tournament Director, Alabama State Games

At the Alabama State Games, you can also expect to see incredible feats of strength and determination from over 77 Powerlifting participants.

I spoke with Heidi Dehnel, Powerlifting Tournament Director to learn a little more about what participants can expect from this new sport.

“Athletes of all ages lift hundreds of pounds, pushing themselves to the limit for new records and first place. The energy in the room is electric as competitors squat, bench press and deadlift over 400lbs.

It’s a tremendous honor to have powerlifting included in this year’s Alabama State Games. Our team’s years of dedication have paid off as the sport has grown to the point of being featured in Alabama’s largest multi-sport event.

Once the news broke, there was a significant demand for spots, and they filled up rapidly. Although powerlifting has never been an Olympic sport, competing at the State Games feels like a step closer for our athletes to showcase their love and hard work in the sport.”
