Ed Meyerson knew the risks his grandsons would have due to his family’s history of prostate cancer.

Dedicated to helping future generations, Meyerson formed an idea and called on an old friend to help put his plan into action.

Meet Ed Meyerson

As a charter member and past president of UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center Advisory Board, Meyerson noticed the lack of talk between prostate cancer survivors.

A survivor of the disease himself, Meyerson wanted to do something to help fund prostate cancer research in the South. So he called on former Southeastern Conference (SEC) Commissioner and fellow prostate cancer survivor, Mike Slive.

In 2017, the two co-founded The Mike Slive Foundation.

About The Mike Slive Foundation

When I spoke to Meyerson, he explained that his idea for a prostate cancer research foundation needed some name recognition.

Who better to bring into play than former SEC Commissioner and one of the most well-known names in sports, Mike Slive?

Inspired by his own battle with prostate cancer, Slive co-created the Foundation and served as its first president.

“We focus on athletics because we have so many stories of coaches and athletes who have had their careers cut short because of prostate cancer. So, we’ve identified with many coaches who can help us tell our story.”

Ordering a license plate is simple, and it goes a long way. Here’s how Meyerson knows this fundraiser is so important:

“We send nurses to SEC basketball games to do blood tests on anyone interested. At one of the games, we tested around 30 men. Out of those 30 men, 12 tested positive for needing treatment.

One of those men has since come out and said that without that test, he may not be alive.

So, yes, through a blood test, which is funded by that tag, you can save lives.”
