RMT and UAB’s Theatre Department have a long and impressive history of providing performing arts and education in Birmingham.

Now, the two educational powerhouses are rejuvenating their formal relationship with the production of Sister Act this April.

Through the collaboration, UAB Theatre students can get hands-on experience by working and performing alongside some of the top talents in Birmingham.

What do participants think?

UAB Theatre student McKenna Shaw landed the role of Sister Mary Robert in Sister Act.

“What I’ve learned through this program is that you experience the real world while getting your education, so when you’re thrust into the real world, you’re ready.

There are very few college programs that have a residency program like this. It’s a unique and great opportunity.”

One of Sister Act’s talented cast members is international and national actress Nicole Vanessa Ortiz. She plays the show’s lead character Deloris Van Cartier.

“Coming in as a guest artist, it’s always exciting to work with a new generation of performers who are finding their imprint in the roles they play.

It gives me a humbling opportunity to be responsible with how I show up every day, for everyone I’m coming to work with.

Whatever example I’m setting, they’re going to take note when they go out into the real world after graduating.”

About the show

The story follows Deloris Van Cartier, a lively lounge singer forced to take refuge from her mobster boyfriend. Under the witness protection program, Deloris is sent to live in the last place she ever expected—a convent.

Under the guise of a nun, Deloris upends the quiet lives of the resident sisters with her less-than-wholesome habits and sarcastic personality. As you can imagine, the show is filled with humor.

RMT’s production of Sister Act is Nicole’s third time playing the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier. Her first was in New Jersey; her second was in South Korea.

“Apparently God has me on an unofficial Deloris Van Cartier tour because I did not think my next job coming home to America was going to be in Deloris’ shoes.”

But, it’s a character she continues to be excited to portray.

“She’s silly. She’s unapologetic. One of the things that I definitely feel inspired by is her confidence.

When people come to see Sister Act they’re really excited about the high-energy dance numbers and nuns dancing to disco. But I like a lot of the tender moments.

When Deloris finds Queen of Angel’s Convent and she gets to know all of these nuns and these sisters through Mother Superior’s generosity by letting her stay there, she realizes all of these things she didn’t have growing up, like unconditional love.
