Buddy’s BBQ in Alabaster is reopening this week on Thursday, March 21.

The iconic BBQ joint just off Highway 31 (411 1st St N, Alabaster) closed three months ago after the passing of its patriarch and owner Buddy Hyde in December.

An “Alabaster original” Hyde opened the restaurant back in 1976 when the population of the town hovered around 3,000. Today, 33,000 people reside in this fast-growing suburb of Birmingham.

“He (Buddy) became a pretty good staple here. At the time Buddy’s was one of the few restaurants in Alabaster. There was a Dairy Queen, Captain Ds,  Pizza Hut and they were all right here together. Thompson High School at that time was a 3A school.”

~ Danny Hyde, Buddy’s son told Bham Now about Alabaster 48 years ago

Through his restaurant, Buddy sponsored little league baseball teams, supported Friday night football game and their concessions and participated for years in the “Taste of Alabaster.

“He pretty much taught us everything he knew. The recipes and everything will be the same. It’ll be the same great food they’re used to.”

The restaurant will open on Thursday, March 21st at 11:00PM. The following day, Friday, March 22, 3:00PM the City of Alabaster is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“This is what he wanted —  his legacy to continue. He really enjoyed doing this. He was still working here every single day coming in here to the day you got sick in the hospital. A week before he passed he was already here,  working at 80 years old.

We’ve had a lot of support from the community. We appreciate that. And I think they’re all excited for us to be back. We’re looking forward to it.”
