Ready to explore the wardrobe of your dreams? You’ll wish you could try everything on in the Heroes and Villains: The Art of the Disney Costume exhibition at the BMA.
The exhibition is comprised of 70 real-life costumes you’ve seen and loved in Disney movies, such as:
- Captain Jack Sparrow’s pirate garb
- Cruella De Vil’s fashionable frock
- Cinderella’s glass slipper
- Sanderson Sisters’ wicked wardrobe
- Belle’s ball gown from Beauty and the Beast
- Mary Poppins’ dress from Mary Poppins Returns
My favorite part was getting to see all the steps taken to make Cinderella’s Swarovski glass slipper.
“The BMA is proud to work with Disney on our first major exhibition in nearly a decade, which will offer Birmingham a rare first-hand look at famous costumes that are a crucial part of Disney’s incomparable storytelling.”

Iconic Disney characters in Birmingham at the BMA
The main exhibition gallery is organized into three Disney archetypes—heroes, villains and everything in between—each dedicated to Disney’s complex and intriguing characters. Alongside the displays, interactive elements allow visitors to fully engage with the enchanting world of Disney costuming.
Of course, Cinderella has to have a special feature. I had the chance to admire the beautiful dresses worn by the beloved Disney character. I’ve never wanted to be a princess more than I did in that moment.
