Road closures in Mountain Brook + Crestline Villages—what you need to know, including how to support local businesses
Reading time: 3 minutes
If you’ve been in Mountain Brook Village lately, you’ve surely run into “Road Closed” signs and wondered what’s happening, how long it will last and how you can get where you’re going. We spoke to Sam Gaston, Mountain Brook City Manager, to find out everything you need to know.
What’s up with all the construction in Mountain Brook?
According to Gaston, “the Jefferson County Environmental Services Department is doing a very large sewer project with Mountain Brook and Crestline Village.”
- What’s happening: They’re combining three extremely old sewer lines into one brand new line that “should give great service for many years into the future—hopefully past our lifetimes.”
- Why it matters: Having upgraded sewer lines is a public health issue and helps to abate sanitary sewer overflows.
- When it will be finished: On or before February 22
- Fun fact: Some of the sewer lines are 16-18 feet deep.
How to get around Mountain Brook road closures
While a section of Cahaba Road at Culver Road is closed for approximately four weeks, parking and sidewalks are open on Cahaba Road and a section of Culver Road. That said, it’s important to be cautious and plan ahead.
Here’s what Ritch’s Pharmacy recommends
We spoke to Becky Sorrell, who, with her husband Ralph, has owned Ritch’s Pharmacy since 1997. She said she and her neighbors “completely understand the frustration with the project right now,” and they’re more than happy to help customers get what they need.
Here’s what she recommends:
- Call ahead: The business you’re trying to get to can give you directions, depending on that day’s road closures + traffic conditions.
- Some businesses have back alleys you can access.
- Call Ritch’s for delivery service: 205-871-1141

“Supporting local businesses is always important and should be a priority for our community members because it’s the local businesses who give back to the community. We understand it can be difficult at times, and we really do appreciate our customers and our patients making the effort to support us.”
