Construction on Edgehill at Southtown—an upcoming mixed-use development in Birmingham’s Southside—is moving forward ahead of schedule. Bham Now took a tour of the site and spoke with project leaders to learn more.

About the Edgehill at Southtown development

Announced in 2019, Edgehill at Southtown is an upcoming mixed-use development featuring greenspaces, shops, restaurants and more.

The new development is located on the footprint of Southtown Court, a 455-unit public housing community that was built in 1941. After approving the demolition and redevelopment of the site in 2019, HABD and their development partner Southside Development Company (SDC) prepped the site for redevelopment before breaking ground on April 14, 2023.

“This project began about five years ago, but we’ve only started on the family building six months ago. Our offices are not far, so my favorite part has been seeing seeing this building rise out of the ground so quickly. We’re shooting for an October move-in, so we’ll be starting to qualify tenants to come back to this building in the next few months.”

Ed Weldon, Vice President, SPM, LLC

Since April 2023, developers have been hard at work to complete the first building on Edgehill at Southtown’s campus. Once complete, the family residential building will include a mix of 60 residential units with a wide array of amenities, including:

  • A computer room
  • A fitness center
  • A playground
  • A community room
  • A gazebo
  • And more!

“We’re about 50% complete with the family building, and we’re aiming to welcome residents by October. Once complete, this will be one of the most premium residential buildings in the city. HABD is looking forward to welcoming its residents for move-in and for them to experience living in this community.”

James Hawkins, Project Manager, Housing Authority of the Birmingham District

In addition to the family residential building, developers Capstone Building and the Benoit Group have begun pouring the concrete slab for Edgehill at Southtown’s senior building. James Hawkins hopes to see that project going vertical within the month.
