A new—but familiar—restaurant is coming soon to Avondale. Crestwood residents Eric Wallace and Justin Shubert are planning to offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night options at a new Lag’s Eatery—paying homage to the original Lag’s Eatery that operated in Homewood from the 1970’s until 2009.

Lag’s Eatery coming to Avondale

The return of Lag’s Eatery was announced on the restaurant’s Facebook and Instagram pages on Monday. The new restaurant will be owned by Eric Wallace and Justin Shubert, two Crestwood residents who worked at the original Lag’s Eatery in Homewood.

“Justin and I have been wanting to reopen Lag’s Eatery ever since it closed. At the end, the owner—who was basically like family to me—had a heart attack, and asked me to run the place while he got better. What was supposed to be two weeks turned into eight months. Sadly, he was not able to recover and ended up having to sell the restaurant.”

Ever since the original Lag’s Eatery closed in 2009, Eric and Justin have always wanted to reopen the restaurant. Six months ago, Justin found an opportunity to buy the building at 4350 3rd Ct. South, a cozy space that was previously home to LoLo’s BBQ.

Now, Eric and Justin are bringing the beloved eatery back to Birmingham.

“What drew people to Lag’s was the fact that everything on the menu was good, solid and simple. Even the burgers were simple: there was a regular cheeseburger and a deluxe cheeseburger. We’ll be offering breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night—just affordable, classic dishes done right with no twists. We hope those values create the same community vibe that the original Lag’s had.”

Over the next few months, Eric and Justin will be building out the restaurant to get ready for a project opening in Summer 2024.
