Earlier this year, the City of Hoover announced a new mixed-use development near Riverchase Parkway. Dubbed Riverwalk Village, the development will focus on health and wellness and will include medical offices, walking trails, green spaces and housing/retail areas.

Today, the City of Hoover and Hoover HCA took the next step forward in the development by announcing that they had filed a Certificate of Need (CON) application with the State Health Planning and Development Agency (SHPDA) for an Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) and Diagnostic Facility.

“The Hoover Health Care Authority has today filed a comprehensive and well-documented Certificate of Need application to present a compelling case to the Governor and the Certificate of Need Review Board. This application will be carefully studied by SHPDA staff in Montgomery and presented through a public hearing at the State Capitol in Montgomery. The overwhelming supportive crowd today and the focused approach utilized by the Health Care Authority on health care and wellness for the future will help convince the CON Review Board that this project is sorely needed and that it will transform health care in our area. The time has come for Hoover to be an innovative force for healthcare improvement and cost-effectiveness.”

Why does the Hoover HCA need to apply to build a medical facility? According to the press release, the SHPDA administers CONs to ensure quality and accountable healthcare services in the state.

“As the sixth largest city in the state, Hoover is home to nearly 100-thousand residents, however, we don’t have a strong medical presence. That changes today! We are going after what we believe is the national trend in health care and we are getting ahead of the
curve. We were very methodical and strategic in formulating the request we are making in our Certificate of Need application. We talked with residents to get their input, we researched the various directions in which the healthcare industry is moving, and we commissioned a study that helped us determine the specific specialties we need in Hoover. No doubt, this ambulatory surgical center will have a tremendous impact on the Hoover economy.”
