Birmingham
Forecast for January 12, 2024 (National Weather Service Birmingham Office)

The U.S. National Weather Service Birmingham Office is calling on Birmingham metro residents to prepare for severe weather on Friday,  January 12th.

“Enhanced Risk” portions of Birmingham Metro

The Birmingham Office issued its forecast map Wednesday evening showing portions of Central Alabama, from southern Shelby County to Eufaula  under the “Enhanced Risk” category. Birmingham, Gadsden and Tuscaloosa fall under Slight Risk. Conditions could change by Friday morning.

Here is the forecast description, which was issued Wednesday evening:

“Severe weather is expected across Central Alabama on Friday from 8AM to 4 PM. Greatest threat timing is around midday to early afternoon generally along and east of the I-65 corridor south of the I-20 corridor. All modes of severe weather are possible, including tornadoes, damaging winds, and quarter-sized hail.”

Be prepared Birmingham

The ominous forecast comes exactly one year after a tornado outbreak occurred last year on January 12, 2023, causing major damage throughout Central Alabama, including Selma and Alexander City.

We all have a day to prepare.

Below is a list of tips

  • Start Charging Electronics: Remember to start charging your electronics – phones, laptops, radios etc…so you can watch the weather even if the power goes out.
  • Create a Communications Plan: Have a family plan that includes an emergency meeting place and related information. If you live in a mobile home or home without a basement, identify a nearby safe building you can get to quickly, such as a church or family member.
  • Create a Plan: Pick a safe room in your home, such as a basement, storm cellar, or an interior room on the lowest floor with no windows. Check more ideas for your family plan at: https://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan
  • Practice Your Plan: Conduct a family severe thunderstorm drill regularly so everyone knows what to do if a tornado is approaching. Make sure all members of your family know to go there when tornado warnings are issued. Don’t forget pets if time allows.
