After 63 years in business, Smokehouse Steak & Seafood will be closing its doors. The iconic Greek restaurant’s last day of service is December 22, reports CBS 42.

Goodbye to a favorite Birmingham diner

Located next to Niki’s West and the Alabama Farmers Market, owner Theo Hontzas opened Smokehouse in 1960. For decades, Smokehouse served meats, Southern sides and Greek fare. The cafeteria-style restaurant became a local favorite due in large part to its access to fresh produce from the farmers market nearby.

Now in his 90s, Hontzas has decided it’s a good time to finally retire.

The Hontzas family is behind many iconic Birmingham restaurants

If the Hontzas name sounds familiar, maybe some of their restaurants will ring a bell. In addition to Smokehouse, members of the Hontzas family are responsible for opening spots like Niki’s West, Fish Market and Johnny’s.
