Today, the organizers of the 76th  Annual National Veterans Day announced this year’s lineup and parade route through downtown Birmingham.

Longest-running Veterans Day parade in America

The Magic City is home to the longest-running Veterans Day parade in the nation.

  • Clydesdales - 75th Veteran's Day Parade (Bham Now)
  • Vintage Firetruck - 75th Veteran's Day Parade
  • Vintage Jeep - 75th Veteran's Day Parade
  • Motorcycle with sidecar - 75th Veteran's Day Parade

The national holiday was the brainchild of Birmingham native Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran who led a delegation in 1947 to lobby General Dwight Eisenhower to change the existing Armistice Day to Veterans Day.

Seven years later, President Eisenhower signed legislation making Veterans Day a permanent national holiday on our calendar.

Below is a video Bham Now produced about Weeks’ great-grandson and family’s continued connection to the local event and holiday.
