1. Cheryl Davis, Unit Clerk, 30 years

Cheryl Davis has worked at Children’s for 30 years. Her story of how she ended up working there is one straight out of a movie scene.

30 years ago, Cheryl’s sister was having her first baby at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. This was the first baby on this side of her family, so to say she was excited was an understatement.

The baby was born healthy and they were ready to leave the hospital to head home when a nurse coming in for her shift asked if she could take a listen to their baby’s heart. Her reason—she loved starting her shift off right by listening to a new baby’s heart.

“She put her stethoscope to his chest, then told us that she worked in the cardiology unit and heard something that she wanted her doctors to hear.

Long story short: that nurse saved my nephew’s life; he was taken to emergency surgery and had open heart surgery that day. We were told he probably wouldn’t have lasted through the night had we left and gone home. We were treated so well, and it was evident to me that everyone there enjoyed their jobs.”

She told her family that day that she wanted to work at a Children’s hospital and applied as soon as she got back to Birmingham.

“This job is so special to me because everyone here can make a difference in somebody’s life. Children’s is truly a teaching place; it has the feel of no big ‘I’s’ and little ‘you’s’. Everyone is a part of the team and everybody’s job matters. Working at Children’s for me is an investment; I have received tenfold over what I’ve put in over my years of service.”

2. Dr. Ashley Love, Children’s of Alabama Pediatrician at Midtown Pediatrics, 5 months

Dr. Ashley Love started working as a pediatrician for Children’s Midtown Pediatrics just a few months ago in May.

She previously worked in Auburn as a community pediatrician. There, she found that she had a passion of working in a clinic where she could develop strong relationships with patients and their families. She made the move to The Magic City and chose to join Midtown Pediatrics, where she could focus her time and energy on doing what she loves.

“During my time in residency, I always felt that Children’s is a great place that is dedicated to providing the best care for children in our state. After meeting the other wonderful doctors at Midtown and knowing that we have support from the Children’s system right down the street, the decision to move our family back to Birmingham and take this job was a no-brainer.”

Dr. Love knew she wanted to be a pediatrician after she shadowed a family friend in high school. She said kids are simply the best patients and she wouldn’t choose any other career.

“Sam, my 5-year-old, tells everyone I am a “baby doctor” or that I spend my days “seeing babies”. While I do love caring for newborns, this job is even more special to me because I get the opportunity to care for children at many different stages of life—from struggles with breastfeeding or potty training all the way to managing high school and life stressors as a teen.”

Dr. Bryan Goolsby just moved back to Alabama earlier this year and found a job as a pediatrician in the Children’s system at Pediatrics East-Trussville. This place felt like a perfect fit.

“I feel like being a part of a larger system and its many resources are often very helpful for patients and families. Specifically, I felt right at home with the staff and physicians here at Pediatrics East-Trussville and felt very fortunate to have the opportunity to join them.”

Even though he has been on the job for a few months, he’s confident this is the right place for him and has already made some special memories.

“I feel like I have the best job in the world. We get to watch children grow into young adults and be a part of the journey of families—from the first couple nights at home with their first newborn, through grade school and into the teenage years. It is really a wonderful opportunity and privilege.”
