The Kiwanis Vulcan Trail on Birmingham’s Red Mountain is adding a trail spur named after the winningest football coaches in Alabama and Auburn history.

On October 3, 2023, the Freshwater Land Trust (FLT) officially opened the Bryant-Jordan Trail Spur with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Joining FLT staff for the event were Dr. David Hicks, Jefferson County’s new Health Officer, Scott Myers of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Shelton Thompson from the Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Scholarship Program and Jeh Jeh Pruitt with Good Day Alabama.

Kiwanis Vulcan Trail Addition made possible by Bryant-Jordan donation

The development of this trail spur was made possible by a 4.62 acre-parcel land donation from the Bryant-Jordan Scholar Athlete Foundation, Inc.

The new trail spur is best accessed at the Green Springs trailhead on the Kiwanis Vulcan Trail. Walking east toward Vulcan, the spur can be found on the southside of the trail. It is not long, but it is steep. The trail travels toward Beacon Parkway. It leads to and ends at a rock outcropping.

“We are excited to open the Bryant-Jordan Trail Spur, the newest amenity of the growing Red Rock Trail System. As Red Rock continues to grow and evolve, we are thankful for partnerships that allow us to cater to more Red Rock users.”

Carolyn Buck, FLT’s Red Rock Trail System® Director

The construction of the trail spur was made possible by the Jefferson County Department of Health.

In the future FLT will also add additional amenities on the spur and property, including workout stations that will have basic equipment like benches and pull-up bars.

Honored to be a part of Kiwanis Vulcan Trail

“The Bryant-Jordan Foundation is honored to be a part of the Kiwanis Vulcan Trail. Our Board of Directors was eager to put this property to good use and being able to donate this land to the Freshwater Land Trust was the perfect fit. The Bryant-Jordan Trail Spur signifies the culmination of many months of planning, and we are grateful for our partnership with Rusha Smith and her team, who worked diligently to bring this all together.”

Scott Myers, CEO and Executive Director of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame
