About the Alabama Workplace Evolution conference, Oct. 5

Raise your hand if you support good mental health in the workplace (my hand is up). At APC’s Alabama Workplace Evolution conference on Thursday, October 5, you’ll learn even more about why this topic is so important. 

Aimed to help both employers and employees learn how to address mental health, substance use and recovery in the workplace, all who attend will be equipped with the education and tools needed to create programs and informed policies to support a healthy workforce.

During the conference, you’ll hear from prominent local speakers and participate in beneficial break-out sessions covering a variety of important topics. In collaboration with the Jefferson County Department of Health, APC will also offer free Narcan training at the conference. All event-goers will receive a free Narcan kit.

• Leslie Plaia, M.Ed., LPC, CEDS-S: Executive Director of Substance Use and Behavioral Health at SAFE Project (Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic), Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist

Plenary Speakers:

• Cheryl Brown Merriweather: Co-founder, Vice President an Executive Director for the International Center for Addiction and Recovery Education (ICARE)
• Reggie A. Parker: Licensed Professional Counselor with special interest and experience in grief and crisis counseling. He also serves as the City of Hoover’s Behavioral Health Coordinator.

• Crystal Holcomb: Chief Operating Officer at Expedited Transport Agency and specialist in Negotiation, Sales Management and Team Building 
• Bronwyn McIntuff: Former Director of the UAB Addiction Recovery Program and adjunct faculty member in the UAB Department of Social Work
• Dr. Stephen Taylor: Board-certified in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine. He’s also Director of the Player Assistance/Anti-Drug Program of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA).

Addiction Prevention Coalition hosts the Alabama Workplace Evolution conference

Behind the Alabama Workplace Conference is local nonprofit Addiction Prevention Coalition. Here are some fast facts about the organization and how it strives to help the Birmingham community:

• It’s a local nonprofit community resource whose vision is to be a leader in addiction prevention by inspiring people to live with hope, resilience + purpose. 
• It offers educational webinars, resources + support groups for those going through recovery as well as their families.
• It provides recovery support through special events. One is the annual End Addiction Walk that draws 3000+ participants from across the Greater Birmingham Area.
• It offers prevention education and groups in community organizations, workplaces + schools.

Another important thing to know is that all proceeds from the conference help fund APC’s year-round efforts to provide prevention and awareness programming to the Birmingham metro area.
