Barbenheimer drops in Birmingham. What you need to know on screenings and more

It’s finally here, the movie event of the year—Barbenheimer! If you haven’t yet bought your tickets to see Barbie or Oppenheimer in Birmingham, there’s still time. Read on to learn more about the two movies and where you can watch them this weekend in Birmingham.

What is Barbenheimer?

In case you’ve been living under a rock this summer, “Barbenheimer” refers to the simultaneous opening of two massive blockbuster hits on Friday, July 21:

• Barbie, a fantasy comedy film directed by Greta Gerwig based on the Barbie line of dolls.
• Oppenheimer, an epic biographical thriller directed by Christopher Nolan surrounding J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the first Atomic Bomb.

Since the two movies couldn’t be more different their simultaneous opening has become an Internet sensation, with countless memes and challenges to see both movies in one sitting.

Although Barbie and Oppenheimer officially open today, there were some special showings last night. Viktoria Havasi, M.D., Ph.D.—a clinical research data coordinator at UAB and Birmingham’s Mural Collector—was one of the lucky few who saw Barbie last night at Sidewalk Cinema.

“I saw Barbie at Sidewalk Cinema, and they did a really great job. They had a Photo Booth designed to look like the Barbie packaging box, and you could take your photo there—they even had glitter! Plus, they were selling Barbie t-shirts that supported sidewalk, had a Barbie-themed cocktail and even replaced the red carpet with pink carpet. It was really, really fun!”
