Happy Masters week to those who celebrate! We had the chance to talk with Birmingham’s very own Sepp Straka about coming back to The Masters for a second time, making a hole-in-one during the practice round and more. Plus, we’ve rounded up a few ways to enjoy the week from right here in The Magic City. Keep reading for more.

A special experience

Sepp Straka couldn’t be more excited to be at Augusta National for his second time.

“It feels great, anytime you can get to Augusta National, it is a special day. They treat us so well during this week, and you never want to take it for granted. So every time feels special.”

As for feeling any different the second time around, the experience is just as special, and the course hasn’t changed much.

“It’s not much different, they changed one of the tee boxes on 13 to make it longer, but other than that the course is very similar to last year.”

A solid start to the week

To make the week even more exciting, Straka made a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th hole during Monday’s practice round.

“The hole in one was a dream come true. I don’t think you could pick a better hole in golf to have one so that will always be a special day.”

I obviously had to ask Sepp where his go-to courses are in Birmingham. He said the two main courses he plays are Greystone and Shoal Creek.

“They are phenomenal courses that play a huge part in getting me ready to play when I’m home.”

I wouldn’t be a Bham Nower if I didn’t ask his favorite place to eat in The Magic City. After all, he proposed to his now wife at Gianmarco’s, so we know he has good taste.

“My number one is always The Fig Tree in Cahaba Heights. It’s really close to where I live and the menu always changes. I don’t think I’ve every had a meal there that I didn’t absolutely love.”

Celebrate from The Magic City

The Masters are a tradition unlike any other, and a fun spread of food and drinks is the perfect way to celebrate. Birmingham local Francie Kaufman of Fairway Finds shared four Masters-inspired recipes to ensure your watch party is a hit.

Otey’s Tavern in Mountain Brook is a classic spot to watch any and all sports, especially the Masters. Recently recognized by Garden and Gun, the dive bar will undergo an Augusta National worthy makeover on Saturday, April 8 complete with sod, azaleas and magnolias. According to Garden and Gun’s highlight, Otey’s regulars will often show up in their green jackets and Caddyshack-inspired outfits.

Stay tuned to the Masters to watch Birmingham’s Sepp Straka as well as Mountain Brook’s Gordon Sargent.
