Food Giant to open Five Points West location in April

UPDATE: Alabama neighborhood grocer Food Giant will be coming to Five Points West in April, located in the former Winn-Dixie grocery space at 2220 Bessemer Road. The grocery store’s meat department will be run by Meat Depot, a local grocer known for its bulk meat deals and low name brand prices.

Food Giant coming to Five Points West

Five Points West has been a food desert since the Winn-Dixie closed its doors in 2018. Since then, finding a new grocery store for the Five Points West area has been a priority of Mayor Randall Woodfin and the Birmingham City Council. In March 2022, Food Giant—a neighborhood grocer with five locations across Alabama—was selected to replace the former Winn-Dixie.

According a representative from Five Points West Shopping City, Food Giant will be supported by Meat Depot, who will run the meat department at the store’s Five Points West location. Meat Depot announced this partnership on Facebook, promising “crazy meat deals, flash sales, low prices on name brand items, $5 steak nights and MUCH MORE!”

According to Meat Depot’s post on Facebook—which garnered hundreds of shares and comments—the grocer plans to open in April.
