What is the Transformation Challenge?
Orangetheory’s annual Transformation Challenge is the toughest—but most rewarding—way to kick off the new year. The challenge? Whoever loses the highest percentage of weight/body fat during the eight-week challenge wins bragging rights and a sweet cash prize.
Like all workouts at Orangetheory, the Transformation Challenge is backed by science. At the beginning and end of the challenge, participants take an InBody Test body scan to assess their progress.
We spoke with several local Orangetheory members taking on the Transformation Challenge head-on to learn more.
1. Emily Batemon
Emily Batemon is more than a regular at Orangetheory—she’s a founding member at the Trussville Studio! Emily joined the Orangetheory family in 2019 and has been a steady member ever since.
“Orangetheory makes it so easy to understand if you’re hitting your goals with the blue, green, orange and red color system. Other gyms I’ve been to have formulas that are impossible to remember, but Orangetheory’s system just makes sense.”
Emily Batemon
Emily participated in the Transformation Challenge in 2019 and 2020, but took a break in 2021. Now, she’s back and ready to tackle the Transformation Challenge again! This year, Emily consulted with an Orangetheory Fitness instructor and set a goal of burning off 3% body fat during the eight-week Transformation Challenge.
“Orangetheory isn’t just great for getting into shape—it can also be a form of therapy. Whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, I come to Orangetheory to burn off the stress. I feel calm after a workout, and that gratification keeps me coming back. If you have any doubts about the Transformation Challenge or Orangetheory in general, my advice is to just do it!”

2. Kimberly & Jason McDougall
Kimberly McDougall is no stranger to the Transformation Challenge—in fact, she’s a past winner of the challenge! Between running two local Montessori schools and raising three children of their own, Kimberly and her husband, Jason, don’t have a ton of time to dedicate to working out, so they make sure every second counts.
“We fell in love with the Orangetheory Fitness community and try to hit the studio four or five times a week. Working out certainly helps with the stress of having 50 employees and educating 200+ kids. It helps keep us happy and healthy all at the same time!”
Kimberly McDougall
2023 will be Kimberly’s third year doing the Transformation Challenge, and she’s determined to win again.
“My husband and I are very competitive and motivate each other to work harder. He doesn’t like to come in second, and I don’t like to come in second—so the competitive aspect of the Transformation Challenge encourages us to diet better and hit the treadmill & weights harder.”

3. Chloe Gardner
Unlike Emily and Kimberly, 2023 will be Chloe Gardner’s first year participating in the Transformation Challenge. Originally from Louisiana, Chloe moved to The Magic City to study at Birmingham-Southern College. That’s when she got involved with Orangetheory.
“A couple of my best friends in college and I decided to give Orangetheory a shot as sophomores, and I ended up falling in love with the program. I don’t know how to use all of the equipment in the gym by myself, so the group atmosphere is huge plus.”
Chloe Gardner
This may be Chloe’s first year doing the Transformation Challenge, but she’s not one to back down from a good challenge.
“My friends and I have the same goal—we want to get in the habit of working out on a solid schedule. As a recent graduate, it can be tricky to find a regular time to workout, so we feel like the Transformation Challenge is a good way to get into that rhythm.”
