Everything about Dreamgirls

Dreamgirls
Dreamgirls is a beloved classic—don’t miss the chance to see it in Bham. (Red Mountain Theatre)

Yes, we’re talking about that musical which became a big-time movie with stars like Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé and Jaime Foxx. From Broadway to Hollywood, Dreamgirls is now hitting the big stage in Birmingham.

On the road to stardom, this singing trio from Chicago is packed with talent and bold, fun personalities. You’ll get to watch stars being born through a journey filled with fights, hardships and broken hearts as these singers go from hopefuls to superstars.

If you love Motown groups like The Supremes and The Shirelles, this musical is just for you. The soulful R&B songs will transport you back to the 1960s and 70s, so cue up favorites like “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” and “Move” to get ready for the show.

“It’s a story about sisterhood, redemption and love. Come and laugh with us. Come, come, come!”

A talented cast is bringing this production to life in The Magic City. Actress Halo Wheeler is no stranger to Red Mountain Theatre, and she couldn’t be more excited to have a starring role in this beloved musical.

“As a Black actor, I love Black stories. I love to tell stories that are familiar to us. This is a story that you grow up knowing about—you watch the movie and know the songs. So, it’s definitely a dream to be one of the Dreams.”

If you’re familiar with this production, you know Dreamgirls nails that classic, glamorous look. Actress Chelcy Cutwright shared how exciting it is as a performer to wear these beautiful gowns because when else do we get the chance to dress up?

“It’s a party. It’s beautiful gowns and wigs—it’s going to be beautiful and we’re having so much fun doing it.”

Chelcy Cutwright, Actress, Dreamgirls

UAB student Jalen Kirkman may be new to Red Mountain Theatre’s stage, but behind the elaborate costumes and fun characters, these actors are finding a true community every day when they’re rehearsing. No matter what they do before rehearsal or if they have a 9-5 job, these actors love having the opportunity to do what they are passionate about with like-minded people.

“It’s one thing to be able to come into a space, play around, experiment with different things and find that community, but it’s a lot easier if that community looks like you. There’s an openness to just be you.”

An all-star director

Dreamgirls, RMT
Director Vasthy Mompoint, center, with her lead actors, (L to R) Jeremy Jefferson, Jalen Kirkman, Chelcy Cutwright, Tracy Winborn, Halo Wheeler and Cameron S. White. (Red Mountain Theatre)

This dazzling cast is lucky to have a triple threat who happens to be a Birmingham local. Growing up in Hoover as the child of Haitian immigrants, Vasthy Mompoint has mastered acting, singing and dancing, and is now taking her shot at directing. Red Mountain Theatre’s Dreamgirls is her newest adventure after recent successes like working with Daniel Radcliffe and appearing in multiple Broadway shows. How cool is that?

“Birmingham is where I learned dance and theatre. It’s crazy to leave for 20 years, and then come back to my hometown, to this theatre, to make my directing debut.

I’ve had the great privilege of working on new Broadway shows that are built from the bottom up. When I got the job here at Red Mountain Theatre, I took a piece of paper and wrote down everything I liked from the Broadway directors I’d worked with, and then everything I didn’t. I took that piece of paper and that’s how I’m leading this show.”

Vasthy Mompoint, Director, Dreamgirls

The musical is filled with stunning gowns, groovy songs and characters that will have you laughing until your cheeks hurt. However, Vasthy also wants to focus on the real-life struggles this production portrays.

“Dreamgirls is a wonderful show—the singing, the dancing—but at its heart it’s about Black intellectual property. It’s about the artistic soul of the people who made American music sound the way that it does. It didn’t always end happily for the artists, the way it does in the show. This is our homage to the pain, the struggle and the beauty behind the Motown sound.”
