New year, new businesses! From coffee shops to clothing stores, we’re highlighting five Birmingham businesses that are new and coming soon. Keep reading to see the latest.
1. Santos Coffee
Start your morning with Santos Coffee, a Guatemalan coffee shop, that serves unique, high-quality coffee blends. The Acton Road location is the coffeehouse’s third location in the Birmingham area. I love their mint coffee, which uses a whole mint leaf when brewed to give it a pop of fresh flavor.

2. Barbeque & Biryani
Barbeque & Biryani is a new family-owned restaurant featuring South Central Indian cuisine in the heart of the UAB medical district. Their specialty? Biryani, of course!
“The whole menu is from South Central India. The speciality of our restaurant is biryani which is rice cooked with meat. It could be goat meat, lamb meat or chicken and is marinated in yogurt and selected spices and layered over with rice.”

3. Retrograde Dept.
Taylor Young, a 27-year-old Birmingham entrepreneur, recently opened Retrograde Dept. on 3rd Ave West. Retrograde Dept. sells luxury brands as well as vintage thrifted items and each of her items is unique as she doesn’t like to buy multiple pieces of the same item.

4. Vulcan Wellness & Aesthetics
Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to be healthier and better your wellness? Vulcan Wellness & Aesthetics is here to make your goal happen. Not only do they have micro needling for wrinkles but the shop’s also offering a grand opening special of a $99 weight management consultation and follow up.

5. Cala Coffee
Cala Coffee officially has a place to call home after years of pop-up shops and coffee cart rentals. The company started in 2021 when couple Josh and Melanie decided to roast their own coffee and turn it into a brand.
The grand opening is this Saturday, January 7. Expect scrumptious Ladybird breakfast tacos in the morning and, of course, amazing coffee throughout the day.
