UAB ranked in the top 8% of global universities

In a new report from the U.S. News & World ReportUniversity of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has been ranked in the top 8 percent of global universities and as the highest-ranked school in Alabama. 

The ranking is detailed in a new report that spotlights the Best Global Universities rankings for the 2022-2023 year.

As reported by Bham Now in 2021, UAB previously ranked in the top 10% of global universities. This year, UAB ranked 160th out of more than 2,000 worldwide universities in the 2022 survey.  

“UAB’s continued ascent in these data-driven rankings speaks to our ever-increasing global competitiveness in research and innovation,” said UAB President Ray Watts in a UAB news release.

UAB School of Medicine Leads the Way

Located in the 15th Street Greenway east of the Hill Student Center, the Platanus orientalis (Hippocrates tree) is a descendant of the tree under which Hippocrates, This rare tree was donated by an anonymous donor and planted in 2016 in honor of the late William Brown Deal, M.D., dean emeritus of the School of Medicine.

One of the primary reasons UAB ranked highly was because of the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine. The school placed in the top 100 in seven areas in the top 100 global ranking.

The Best Global Universities methodology is based on data provided by Clarivate, rather than gathered directly from the institutions by U.S. News. Rankings were calculated using bibliometric indicators such as publications, citations and highly cited papers rather than data about specific programs.
