The Moth storytelling pop-up is happening at Railroad Park this weekend—now through Oct. 23
National storytelling nonprofit The Moth, the team behind the Peabody Award-winning Moth Radio Hour and popular podcast, is bringing its Pop-Up Porch—a specially-built tiny storytelling house—to Birmingham this weekend. Here’s everything you need to know.
Come tell your story + listen to others
The Moth has been seeking to uncover new stories and bring them to stages worldwide and to millions of listeners on The Moth Radio Hour and The Moth Podcast for over 25 years.
The Pop-Up Porch is a mobile storytelling lab touring the South this fall and it is HERE this weekend seeking true personal tales from Birmingham locals. What better way to get to know the people in your community than to hear their personal stories?
- What: The Moth Pop-Up Porch in Birmingham — the fifth of six stops on the tour around the south this fall
- When: Now through Sunday, October 23 | 11AM-7PM
- Where: Railroad Park, 1600 1st Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35233
- Cost: Free and open to the public
MORE: Those stopping by the Pop-Up Porch event will have the opportunity to listen to and immerse themselves in stories, learn to craft their own with the help of the organization’s artistic team and mix and mingle with local storytelling enthusiasts. It will be a fun time for everyone.
How it works
At The Moth Pop Up Porch you can:
- Meet Moth story directors, instructors and producers
- Learn how to craft and pitch your own story
- Listen to stories from The Moth archive
- Attend a community event featuring local musicians, artists and creators
- Take part in workshops with local community organizations
The event is free for all, and all you need to do is show up. The Moth’s team will be there to coach those who want to share their stories.
“We have our team here, all trained to help people find a story from their life and share it with their community. If adults have little ones, the kids can play cornhole or giant Jenga, and anyone is welcome to come on and just hang out.”
Jennifer Birmingham, Managing Director of Programs, The Moth
There aren’t many rules when it comes to sharing stories at the Pop-Up. Stories just need to be true + your own.
“The storyteller is the main character here. It’s a story about you and a moment that something changed for you. It can be a big change, it can be a small change, it can be hilarious, it can be very heartfelt. We’re all about telling stories to remind one another about how much we have in common and that we are so much more alike than we are different.”
Jennifer Birmingham, Managing Director of Programs, The Moth
The Pop-Up Porch is presented in collaboration with General Motors.
