With dozens of things to experience all within a short walk, it’s no wonder that Parkside has become one of the most popular places to live in Downtown Birmingham. We spoke with Cameron Cavenaugh, a resident at The Palmer, to learn about why she loves living in Parkside.

Cameron has been living in Parkside since graduating from Auburn University in 2021. After completing her undergrad degree, she was accepted into a Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Together with a friend from Auburn, Cameron began looking into places to live in Birmingham.

After touring several apartment complexes, Cameron and her roommate fell in love with The Palmer—one of Birmingham’s newest luxury apartment communities.

“We knew we wanted to be in Downtown Birmingham so we could be close to work and school. We visited the city for a weekend to tour different apartment communities, but nothing really impressed us. Since The Palmer was in the middle of construction, we weren’t able to go on a tour, but the leasing office sent us a video rendering of the apartment. We loved what we saw, so we decided to sign the lease!”

3 Reasons Cameron Loves Living in Parkside

1. Living close to school & work

One of the biggest reasons Cameron loves living at The Palmer is its proximity to school and work.

“When we moved to Birmingham, we didn’t know the area at all. We wanted to be able to walk to UAB for class or for work, so that was one of the biggest draws to Parkside. I’m five minutes away from work, which is so handy.”

Located in Parkside along 3rd Avenue South, The Palmer is just a short walk from UAB, Railroad Park, Regions Field and tons of coffee shops, restaurants and breweries.

“The location couldn’t be better. Many of my friends from college moved downtown, so we’re able to walk and see each other at Railroad Park. I don’t like to Uber alone, so it’s nice being within walking distance of all the things to do in Parkside. Plus, it saves gas money!”

When baseball season swings around, Cameron joins other residents at The Palmer’s SkyDeck to watch games at Regions Field.

“I’m a huge baseball fan. I grew up around baseball and my brother plays professionally, so I love being so close to Regions Field—especially around baseball season. It’s such a fun and friendly atmosphere.”

2. The Community

After a year of living together, Cameron’s roommate left to move to another city. Since Cameron loved living at The Palmer, she decided to move into a one-bedroom apartment—however, she missed always having someone to spend time with at a moment’s notice.

Luckily, The Palmer fosters a tight-knit community by hosting monthly events for residents.

“When we first moved in to The Palmer, we didn’t know too many people—so we started going to resident events. It was so nice to meet other people who live here. I ended up meeting Amy, the Apartment Life Coordinator at The Palmer. She went to Auburn as well, is my age and is from my hometown in Charlotte—it’s such a small world. The events are one of the main reasons I stayed at The Palmer.”

During one of The Palmer’s community events, Cameron met Scott and Elise Stearns, two empty-nesters who moved to the apartment from the suburbs after their children went off to college. Cameron and the Stearns became fast friends.

“Now that I’m living on my own for the first time, it’s comforting to know someone else living in the same building. The Stearns would immediately come running if I needed them; I really think of them as a second set of parents here. I’ve met such a good group of genuine people by living here.”

3. The Amenities

As a graduate student, Cameron took advantage of the co-working space at The Palmer. Located on the second floor of the Leasing Office, the common workspace is open to all residents 24/7.

“When it comes to studying, my environment is either a big motivator or a big de-motivator. If I was studying late or got up early to study in the morning, the co-working space at The Palmer was the perfect place to buckle down and study for my board exam.

In addition to the 24/7 co-working space, residents have access to a resort-style salt-water pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an outdoor grilling area and so much more.

“When I walked my dad around The Palmer for the first time and asked him what he thought, he said, ‘There’s not a lack of amenities, that’s for sure!'”
