Redevelopment of Webb Building Begins
Redevelopment has officially begun on the Webb Building, a structure located on the southwest corner of 20th Street and 2nd Avenue North. The project was first reported by Bham Now in 2020, when Birmingham’s Design Review Committee approved redevelopment plans for the historic building. The redevelopment includes the Webb Building as well as the neighboring Colorado Loan Co. Building.
Several local firms are involved in the Webb Building redevelopment, including:
- Ladd Real Estate
- ARC Realty
- Stewart Perry Construction Company
- David Baker Architects
- McNair Historic Preservation
“This is one of the best corners in Birmingham with a special history—dating back to the year the city was founded and later uses like the iconic Pete’s Famous. A project like this wouldn’t be possible without the vision and long-term mindset of LRE and a team with the level of experience and talent that Stewart Perry and David Baker Architects have.”ARC Realty
The redevelopment will see the shell of the original 19th century structure unearthed and enhanced, allowing for the building to be filled with six modern apartment residences and first floor retail that will be carefully curated.
The team anticipates a Spring 2023 completion and will have more public information on the residences fall of this year. Meanwhile, the retail spaces are currently available and for lease. Click here to learn more about leasing retail space in the Webb Building.
One of Birmingham’s Oldest Buildings
Fun fact: The Webb Building is one of the oldest standing buildings in Birmingham! Built in 1871, the Webb Building is rumored to be the first 3-story brick building in downtown Birmingham. Over the years, the structure has housed barbershops, cigar shops, clothing stores, restaurants and even an old-fashioned saloon.
