How to help homeless animals by donating to these Birmingham shelters
Reading time: 4 minutes
Giving Tuesday may be over, but it’s still the season for gifting. Why not donate to one of your favorite Birmingham shelters this holiday season. Read more to find out how you can help an animal in need.
Shelby County Humane Society
For the second year, the Shelby County Humane Society is hosting Twas the Night Before Christmas Dinner for their animals. You can sponsor a pet for only $10. Your donation will provide a pet with a plate of homemade food—like sweet potatoes and meat—toys and extra love on Christmas Eve. Give the gift of giving here.
You can Venmo your donation to BestFriendsofShelbyHumane or you can text SHELBY to 26989.
Shop their wishlists, if you want to give more.
Greater Birmingham Humane Society
This year Birmingham Humane Society reached a new record of donor-sponsored adoption events. But they still need your help for the holidays. Become a Constant Companion by donating monthly.
You can also help by donating items this Birmingham shelter needs:
- white towels
- non raw-hide bones
- cat + dog wet food
- blankets
Check out their website to find out more info on what you can do.
Adopt a Golden
Golden Retriever Rescue is managed and operated 100% by volunteers. So this holiday season, you can donate your time to help this Birmingham Shelter. They rely solely on donations to operate. Also, the dogs are housed in private foster homes, since they don’t have a shelter building.
Apply to become a foster or volunteer. Keep Birmingham goldens smiling!
Kitty Kat Haven and Rescue
Want to give the purrfect gift? Donate to Kitty Kat Haven Rescue or grab a coffee at Gatos and Beans and adopt a kitty. Currently, there are a ton of kitties waiting for new homes at this Birmingham Shelter. So, the number one thing they need is food.
Help out these kittens by giving any of these items:
- Fancy feast wet kitten food
- Friskies canned adult food
- Purina one indoor advantage food
- Liter

Two by Two Rescue
One of our favorite Birmingham Shelters, Two by Two Rescue, has something everyone can do. At Two by Two Rescue, you can donate by volunteering or fostering. You can give monetary donations as well. Anything helps!
SO, give an animal a warm place to stay this winter by fostering. If you’re comfortable with animals being in your home temporarily, then apply today for fostering. It’s an awesome experience.
FUN FACT: I’m fostering a senior dog currently and I’m so grateful I can help this dog. You should do it too!
Animal League of Birmingham
Did you know Animal League of Birmingham (ALOB) raises money throughout the year for Birmingham shelters? Basically, they act as a stopgap—or insurance—for shelters in times of crisis. So if a shelter needs immediate help, they go to ALOB.
Help Birmingham Animals out by donating to this organization. You can make a one-time or reoccurring donation here.
Let’s help out Birmingham shelters, so they all can reach their goals by the end of the year. Stay paws-some, Bham.
