Accessories are always fun, but keeping them organized is anything but. We spoke the experts at Closets by Design in Birmingham for tips on how to organize our fave accessories–and wow were we impressed. Here’s what we learned.

1. Jewelry

I love jewelry, especially long necklaces and bracelets. But organizing them… well, I definitely need some help. Feel my struggles? Yay, I’m not alone. So what can you do?

Closets by Design suggests opting for a slat wall with various hooks.

“Placed on an empty wall space inside a closet, a slat wall with hooks makes a pretty and practical display to hang jewelry and other accessories.”

Lisa Adkins, Senior Designer, Closets by Design

Why is this idea brilliant? It saves space. Jewelry doesn’t get tangled. A jewelry wall… need I say more?

2. Neckties + Belts

Just like necklaces, neckties and belts are tricky business when it comes to organization. Stuffing them into a drawer may be the quick solution, but it leads to a frustrating mess.

What to do?

“A great way to organize neckties and belts is to use a sliding tie rack. It can tuck neatly behind clothing, or you can mount it on the wall.”

3. Shoes

Shoe addiction? They are pretty enticing. All the colors. All the styles. All the possibilities.

Sure they are, for the most part, necessary. But they are also the ultimate accessory.

The downside—the more you own, the less likely you’ll know how to keep them organized.

Tired of tripping over your roommate or SO’s size 13s? This tip is for you:

“Shoes worn most often should be placed on lower shelves that are easily accessible. Shoes worn less often can be stored in plastic see-through boxes on a top shelf.”

4. Sunglasses

Are sunglasses your guilty pleasure purchase? I may or may not be guilty of stockpiling this item.

Sunglasses can range in price from cheap to ritzy and can be scratched and broken easily. Storing your sunglasses in your purse isn’t exactly the smartest spot. Convenient, yes. Smart, no.

So the question is, where do you keep your sunnies so that they stay organized and damage-free?

“Try placing sunglasses in a shallow, velvet-lined drawer with lucite dividers.”

Lisa Adkins, Senior Designer, Closets by Design

Why the velvet and dividers?

The velvet protects sunglasses from smudges and scratches, while the dividers keep each item separated so everything has its own designated, damage-free zone.

5. Watches

Just like sunglasses, watches are easily smudged, scratched and broken. So, consider a velvet-lined drawer with lucite dividers for this accessory, too. Not only does it keep everything organized as well as in pristine condition.
