I am so ready for the summer. Warm weather and getaways would be a nice break from running up my electricity bill. That’s still a few months away. Jamaican patties are golden, flakey hand pies with a savory filling. Tropical Grill Jamaican Restaurant makes vegetable, beef or chicken patties. They also serve all the classics, like jerk chicken. Don’t forget a piece of the sweet coco bread. Orders are takeout only at the moment.

2. RowZac Caribbean Restaurant

RowZac Caribbean serves favorite dishes similar to other Caribbean restaurants in Birmingham. One key item on their menu is the ackee and saltfish. This dish is Jamaica’s national dish starring the ackee fruit.

3. Tropicaleo

Tropicaleo is a Birmingham favorite for vegan food. They are the first restaurant in Alabama to partner with ZeroEgg. Tropicaleo serves Puerto Rican classics, like mofongo. Right now they are selling vegetarian and vegan empanadas again.

Order online, or call ahead for contactless pick-up. You can also dine-in on their heated back patio.

Southern Caribbean Jamaican Restaurant’s curry chicken was one of the best meals I had in college. They serve all the classic Caribbean dishes. One dish is the escovitch fish—fried fish topped with a medley of vegetables. Along with the Caribbean dishes, they cook up fried okra and mac and cheese.

This is a tasty spot where you can get a taste of everything. Make sure to call ahead for take out.

Miami Fusion Café serves mouthwatering sandwiches. They also offer all the plantains and yucca you could want. Miami Fusion Café offers a menu of blended flavors from Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Red Sea Ethiopian and Mediterranean restaurant is not one of the Caribbean restaurants in Birmingham. They are actually Birmingham’s only Ethiopian restaurant. Their restaurant now serves Cajun classics, too. Red Sea Ethiopian and Mediterranean is too impressive to leave out.
