Families are spending more time together than ever before. But let’s be honest—all that togetherness can be challenging at times. So put the fun back in family time with a trip to McWane Science Center and explore some of the reasons why the Alabama Tourism Department named this special place in Birmingham the tourist attraction of the year for 2020.
1. It’s the ultimate spot for dinosaur dudes and dudettes
Do dinos rock your world? The Alabama Dinosaurs exhibit at McWane Science Center is a must-see. Here you’ll find the most extensive collection of dinosaur fossils in the state of Alabama.
Yep, fossils on display are actual dinosaur fossils that have been discovered around our very own state like the Alabama Tyrannosaur and Dromaeosaurus (“raptors”). Some of those fossils may even have come from dinosaurs that used to explore and roar in your very own back yard! You’ll also see life-size models of dinosaur skeletons discovered in Alabama. Now that’s something that will get that imagination flowing.
2. It’s filled with underwater exploration
Do you ever wish Birmingham had an aquarium? Well guess what, it does, at McWane Science Center. From enticing fish to glow-in-the-dark jellyfish, you’ll find all sorts of cool creatures at the World of Water Aquariums. My favorite is the turtles. They love to show off their floating and swimming skills to all of the visitors.
Recently, 25 White Spotted Bamboo baby sharks were born and they are totally amazing! Learn all about them including how you can name your very own shark.
3. It’s a Preschooler’s Paradise
Did you know McWane Science Center is home to the coolest preschool hangout around: I’m talking about Itty Bitty Magic City.
Featuring nearly 10 thousand square feet of space, Itty Bitty Magic City offers pint-sized fun for children ages six and under. Through exciting exhibits and hands-on activities, kids are encouraged to use their imagination and learn at play.
Some things they’ll discover, include:
- Fire Station
- Farm
- Veterinarian Clinic
- Market
- Diner
- Garage
Along with social distancing, littles who venture to Itty Bitty Magic City will receive their own bag of toys and props to use as they explore to help minimize the risk of germ exposure.

4. Its Virtual Reality experience is out of this world
Do you dream of soaring through space on Apollo 11 or riding a high-speed roller coasters as it zips around a track? What about plunging into the sea on a deep-diving adventure? You can experience it all with McWane Science Center’s Virtual Reality exhibit.
The new Virtual Reality exhibit has been updated and redesigned to comply with the museum’s public health and safety measures, but don’t worry, the Virtual Reality is better than ever, and is the most immersive 3-D VR experience available in Birmingham. Gamers are loving it! More on guest health and safety.
5. It turns science into a fun and educational experience
Only McWane Science Center could make lying on a bed of nails a fun and educational experience. But hey, making science exciting is what this museum is all about! So head to their popular Bed of Nails and its many other wowing exhibits to see what you learn.
6. It provides educators access to helpful programming
With many kids opting for virtual school this year, everyone is playing the role of teacher. To empower science educators, McWane Science Center has taken their educational programs and demonstrations online with McWane on the Web. If you’re a teacher, educator or parent educating your kids at home, learn how to access all sorts of engaging programs by contacting Lawrence Cooper at lcooper@mcwane.org.
7. It offers awesome souvenirs at the Cool Stuff Store
A trip to McWane Science Center isn’t complete without a stop at the Cool Stuff Store. The shop’s name isn’t a joke, either. It really is filled with cool stuff like astronaut ice cream, wowing science projects, out-of-this-world gadgets and so much more.
Safety Precautions
McWane Science Center’s top priority is the health and safety of its visitors, employees and community. From regular antibacterial fogging throughout the museum to frequent sanitation of high-touch areas, steps are being taken daily to prevent the spread of germs.
