As a parent of a child in elementary school, I know all too well the concern of whether your kiddos are receiving a great education that will set them up for future success. In Birmingham, we are surrounded by many options for pre-K through 8th grade. So what sets Highlands School apart from the rest?

As I researched Highlands School, I was truly impressed by the school’s mission. Why, you ask? Here are a few reasons:

1. Highlands School community provides a nurturing and rich cultural experience for students

From small class sizes to the recently renovated campus facilities, the faculty and staff of Highlands School strive to create a safe and nurturing environment for each and every student.

The student body and faculty also represent a diverse cross-section of Birmingham’s community, drawing families from across the entire metro area.

2. It’s a progressive, independent private school serving infants to eighth graders in Birmingham

Named one of the top 50 private elementary schools in the U.S., Highlands is an independent school. This means their teachers are not restricted by state mandates on curriculum, textbooks and testing. They are given the freedom to create educational experiences that nurture each student’s intellectual curiosity and encourage critical thinking.

With an 8:1 student to teacher ratio, Highlands teachers form deep connections with their students, which helps to promote a lifelong love of learning.

3. The student-centered academic environment motivates students to become confident learners and leaders

Highlands School’s curriculum includes project-based learning to promote engagement and challenge students to think critically. This enables students to become confident learners by collaborating with other students, solving problems and presenting their findings to the community.

What’s also worth nothing is that Highlands School has two state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) labs on campus to promote integrated learning.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) is also integrated into the curriculum to enhance creativity.

4. Highlands students are prepared for life after Highlands

When students graduate from Highlands School, they aren’t simply given a pat on the back and a “good luck.” Highlands outplacement team works with each student and parent to identify the best fit for the graduate’s next step.

Highlands graduates not only get to continue their education at their choice of high schools locally, but many recent graduates have gone on to excel at some of the nation’s most elite schools, including Phillips Exeter Academy, St. Paul’s School and Chatham Hall.
