Four years ago, Jeff Nixon started this drag show as a benefit for AIDS Alabama.

He’d already been supporting Holiday Wish, the nonprofit’s effort to bring Christmas gifts to young people living in their housing programs, for several years.

According to Jeff, Saturn has been an amazing partner, donating their space for the event each year. The first year, it was an experiment, and it’s sold out every year with crowds of about 400.

This event is for an over-18 crowd who’s not too worried about Santa’s “naughty or nice” list.

Obsinity will be hosting this year’s show, with performances by the following Christmas Drag Queens:

  • Kharris
  • Safaree Campbell Starr
  • Sharon Cocx
  • Rummorah Campbell
  • Sam Starr
  • Reese Eve Cocx

2—Holiday Wish provides amazing gifts for young people living in AIDS Alabama’s housing programs.

Holiday Wish program for AIDS Alabama

Holiday Wish exists to make sure that children of the families who live in AIDS Alabama’s housing programs have a holiday worth remembering.

Agency social workers make the list and check it twice so everybody’s included in the holiday cheer. To do this, they reach out to their clients with children and get each child’s wish list.

Donors can give in two ways.

Of course, there are upper limits so the gifts don’t get to pricey. AIDS Alabama gives their very generous donors a couple of options for how to give:

  • Contribute financially, and AIDS Alabama’s expert shoppers hit the town to fill the child’s wish list, OR
  • Pair up with a child—according to the donor’s desire to shop for a certain age or gender child—then shop ’till you drop and bring the new unwrapped gifts to AIDS Alabama.

There are clear priorities for giving.

  1. Children ages 16 and under.
  2. Gift cards for children over 16 whose younger siblings are served by Holiday Wish.
  3. Gift cards for older children with no younger siblings.

Social workers are like elves for parents who get to bring the magic.

“Mom, why did that lady bring a giant black bag to our house,” I can imagine kids asking. To make Holiday Wish work, social workers deliver new and unwrapped gifts plus wrapping paper to the parents.

This gives the parents the chance to wrap the gifts and bring all the magic of the season. For families affected by HIV/AIDS, this is a big boost during a time that can otherwise be really difficult.

To give you an idea of the income levels of AIDS Alabama’s client base, according to the Federal Poverty Guidelines:

  • 85% Very low: less than $11,650 per individual or less than $16,650 per household of four
  • 11% Low: less than $19,450 per individual or less than $27,550 per household of four
  • 3%: Moderate – less than $31,100 per individual or less than $44,400 per household of four: 3%
  • 1%: Any household earning more than $44,400 per year

These gifts make a big difference, and by attending Christmas is a Drag, you can be part of spreading the joy.
