“I’ve always been really good at saying no to dancing in any situation, but it was hard to resist helping a charity as special as First Light… Alas, I now have to throw a professional ballerina in the air six times at the Lyric Theatre.” -Will Lochamy | Photo via Will Lochamy on Facebook

The 3rd annual Dancing with the Stars of the Magic City benefitting First Light is happening tonight at The Lyric Theatre in Birmingham tonight Oct. 10 at 6:30PM, and you don’t want to miss this year’s competition. Meet the Stars 🌟

Some of Birmingham’s most notable names are teaming up with local choreographers and dance professionals to swing + shimmy for a good cause. The 11 teams will each perform a 90-second dance routine, competing for trophies including the Torch People’s Choice Award (that goes to the team who “inspires the most support for First Light.”)

All proceeds support First Light’s emergency shelter and supportive housing programs for homeless women and families in Birmingham. And so far, they’ve raised almost $70k! They’ve been practicing for months in preparation for this day—and it’s finally here! Keep scrolling to get a look at who’s competing:

It's time to meet another team from this year's SCA Presents Dancing with the Stars of the Magic City! Say hello to Martina Monique Winston and Dennis Woods! Martina Winston is from the South Side of Chicago, but she lives in Pelham (Go Panthers!) and loves her community and the Alabama Crimson Tide. She says she is "a wild Zumba instructor, a crazy cheer coach, and a passionate volunteer," and she is also a Human Resources professional and the Diversity & Inclusion Leader at Protective Life. Martina lives with and loves her husband Corey, daughter Jada, son Jordan, Barkley the dog, and Mittens the cat. Martina wonders, "Why has it taken me so long to find First Light? The mission is strong and it is important. I’m honored to serve and happy to make an impact." Dennis Woods first witnessed the transformative power of dance at the age of 19, after his parents were involved in a serious car accident. Doctors said it would be a lengthy and exhaustive rehabilitation, but ballroom dancing became one of the primary therapeutic tools that allowed them to make a full recovery. It was then that Dennis had to experience the ballroom for himself. A 15-year ballroom dance instructor, he has built his reputation on providing the best ballroom dance coaching in Birmingham and throughout the Southeast. We're excited to introduce another team: Dr. Lee Goldenberg and Alexandra Daniel! Dr. Lee Goldenberg graduated with Research Honors from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, thanks to his life-changing experience as a chiropractic patient. Dr. Lee and his wife, Doris, have 4 boys, ranging in ages from 6-18. Dr. Lee is also an avid musician, playing guitar and bass. He plays regularly around town in the acoustic duet, “We are Wolves," a local cover band featuring Dr. Lee and his friend, Brooke Carter. He has owned and operated Greystone Chiropractic in Birmingham since 2012, and is dedicated to the health and vitality of the Birmingham residents. He regularly supports local schools, teams, and charities to support their efforts in the community. Alex Daniel was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and moved to Alabama to attend graduate school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Alex is a Physician Assistant at the Veteran’s Hospital downtown and has been working in the Neurosurgical department for about a year and a half. Dancing has been her passion of since she was a child. At Florida State University, she was a part of the nationally ranked Golden Girls dance team and she loved helping choreograph pieces for her sorority. Whether it was a salsa routine or a step routine, she thought it was wonderful to help benefit and raise awareness for communities in Tallahassee. Meet Diane Waud and David Odenwelder, another stellar team competing in this year's SCA Presents Dancing with the Stars of the Magic City! Diane Waud retired in 2016 after teaching Kindergarten for 25 years at Brookwood Forest Elementary. She enjoys that retirement has given her more time to play tennis, sing in the Junior League of Birmingham Choral Group, and continue to dance with The Birmingham Sugar Babies. A surprise in retirement has been having the recurring role of Grandma in the It's a Southern Thing/So True Y'all videos shown on Facebook and YouTube. The most popular video was "Choosing a Grandmother Name is Serious Business," which has 96 million views on Facebook. Diane is happily married and adores her son and daughter, their spouses and her (soon to be five) grandchildren. She is very involved in Brookwood Baptist Church and loves serving others through mission opportunities there. Since she happily devotes her time to serving others and dancing, she cannot think of a better thing to do than to combine those two things to support the women and children of First Light. David Odenwelder is originally from Massachusetts. He is a ballet dancer with the Alabama Ballet and he enjoys dancing, teaching, being active, traveling and trying different foods. David recently started an outreach program with the Alabama Ballet called Dance Discovery, which presents interactive demonstrations about the wonderful art of ballet. David is excited to work with First Light this year.
