Sure, the Birmingham Burger Fest is about great eats, but it’s also about bringing people together to raise awareness and funds to help patients and families in the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS; also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) in Alabama.

ALS is the most common motor neuron disease in America. Currently, there is no cure and no life-prolonging treatments available.

The Alabama Chapter of the ALS Association supports people living with ALS and their families across Alabama through services and education.

“The Association has two goals. To provide persons and families with ALS support by finding equipment and specialists to serve their needs through all phases of the disease, and raise awareness and advocate for them by organizing fundraising events, such as the Walk to Defeat ALS, BurgerFest and visiting state and national officials to petition for government support of research and aid.”

Kate Joyce, President and founding member, ALS Association Alabama Chapter Junior Board

Walk to Defeat ALS – Hold the Date

Remember the infamous ice bucket challenge from 2014? If you participated, that ice cold water dumped all over you really did make a positive impact.

Since the challenge:

  • $84 million has been committed to research advancing new treatments and a cure.
  • 4 new genes were discovered within the past two years to help identify new therapies.

But even as thrilling as it was to get doused in ice water, the Walk to Defeat ALS continues to be the most influential way to lend help and hope to patients and families living with ALS.

In fact, 60% of the Alabama Chapter of the ALS Association’s income is raised through the Walk to Defeat ALS Program.

When you participate in the walk, you are helping:

  • Support people living with ALS in the community.
  • Advance global research and public policy initiatives aimed at finding treatments and a cure for the disease.

On September 28 from 11AM to 2PM, you can take part in the Walk to Defeat ALS at Homewood Central Park. Register here.
